Originally created in 1932, Kawase Hasui's "Rain at Maekawa in Sagami Province" evokes the quiet poetry of a rainy night along the Tōkaidō Road. Beneath darkened skies, fine lines of rain fall steadily across a village street, where a solitary figure in an indigo kimono walks under a paper umbrella. The restrained palette of greys and blues sets a contemplative mood, while the gentle rhythm of the rain brings subtle movement to the stillness of the scene.

Warm light spills from thatched-roof houses, reflecting softly on the rain-slicked ground and creating a luminous contrast against the night. Framed by shadowed trees and traditional architecture, the composition draws the eye inward, blending human presence seamlessly with the surrounding landscape. Through delicate linework and atmospheric depth, Hasui captures a moment of calm introspection, exemplifying the shin-hanga movement’s ability to transform an ordinary evening into a timeless meditation on light, weather, and quiet solitude.

Each unframed print is rendered on museum-quality archival paper—a substantial, heavyweight stock with a refined matte finish that exudes understated elegance. Designed for collectors who value versatility, these prints arrive ready to frame in your choice of style or display as-is for a modern, gallery-inspired aesthetic.

About the Artist
Kawase Hasui

Kawase Hasui (1883–1957) was one of Japan's most celebrated landscape artists and a central figure in the shin-hanga ("new prints") movement of the early 20th century. Drawing inspiration from traditional ukiyo-e woodblock printing and Western impressionism, he traveled extensively throughout Japan, sketching serene villages, temples, coastlines, and seasonal scenery. His prints are known for their masterful handling of light, atmosphere, and weather—often depicting dawn, twilight, snowfall, or rain with a poetic calm that feels both intimate and timeless.

Over the course of his career, Hasui created more than 600 woodblock designs, many of which helped introduce Japanese printmaking to global audiences. His ability to capture mood and moment earned him deep admiration both in Japan and abroad, and in 1956 he was honored as a Living National Treasure for his contributions to traditional arts. Today, Kawase Hasui's work remains highly collectable, cherished for its quiet beauty and its ability to transport viewers into the peaceful landscapes of early 20th-century Japan.
